HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION

        A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing the good works performed by the People Helping People committee of American Electric Power, Tanner's Creek Plant.

    Whereas, Employees of American Electric Power, Tanner's Creek Plant, Lawrenceburg, Indiana, have been watching their "small acorn grow into a mighty oak" for 11 years now;

    Whereas, That phrase best describes the growth of the People Helping People committee that began 11 years ago at American Electric Power, Tanner's Creek Plant;

    Whereas, Lanny Wyatt, chairman of the People Helping People committee, describes the principal energy behind the group as people who are "making a difference in the lives of needy individuals";

    Whereas, In its first year, People Helping People distributed $400 worth of canned food to the needy in southeastern Indiana and distributed 44,000 cans of food in 1998;

    Whereas, There were enough canned food donations to the Neighborhood Free Store and the Dearborn County Clearinghouse to keep these institutions stocked with food for the entire year;

    Whereas, In addition to the canned food donations, the group donated $300 to each agency it supports;

    Whereas, The agencies supported by People Helping People are the Dearborn County Clearinghouse, Southeastern Indiana Economic Opportunity Corporation in Aurora's Neighborhood Free Store, Quercus Grove Food Pantry, Rising Sun Christian Outreach Center, Versailles American Legion Post 173, Vevay American Legion Post 185, Sunman Food Pantry, and Area 12 Meals on Wheels;

    Whereas, In addition to the Christmas food donations, People Helping People members donated $1,000 to various agencies to help provide medicine for people on fixed incomes and $2,000 to Meals on Wheels;

    Whereas, The donation to Meals on Wheels helped reduce the waiting list and increase the number of people who will be able to receive nutritious meals in their homes;

    Whereas, To raise the money needed to provide these services, the group holds three major events each year, sponsoring a canned food drive in the fall, a marathon in the spring, and an employee golf outing in the summer; and

    Whereas, The program that began as the simple idea of fortunate people helping less fortunate people has become one of southeastern Indiana's biggest charitable contributors: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly wishes to acknowledge the good works performed by the People Helping People committee and to encourage them to continue helping the less fortunate people of southeastern Indiana.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Lanny Wyatt, chairman of the People Helping People committee.
