Synopsis: Animal control. Requires the department of natural resources to include in the trapper training program instruction on the humane way to dispatch trapped animals. Requires the department of natural resources to adopt rules concerning the reasonable and humane execution of wildlife that is hunted, trapped, or snared or must be disposed of.

HOUSE BILL No. 1460



    A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning natural and cultural resources.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

IC 14-22-5-15 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2001]: (a) The department shall adopt rules under IC 4-22-2 concerning the reasonable and humane manner to dispatch wildlife that is hunted, trapped, or snared or other wildlife that must be disposed of.
    (b) The department shall consider the recommendations of the American Veterinary Medical Association when adopting rules under subsection (a).

SOURCE: IC 14-22-36-1; (01)IN1460.1.2. -->     SECTION 2. IC 14-22-36-1 IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2001]: Sec. 1. (a) The department shall establish a trapper training program, including a course of instruction in trapping wild animals, that emphasizes methods, laws, ethics, humane methods to dispatch a trapped animal, responsibilities, natural history, wildlife management, and other matters associated with trapping.
    (b) To carry out subsection (a), the department may cooperate with

an organization that promotes the responsible trapping of wild animals.
