SENATE RESOLUTION

     MR. PRESIDENT:

        I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring Vincennes University, originally founded as Jefferson Academy in 1801, for 200 years of service to the citizens of Indiana.

    Whereas, Jefferson Academy's founding in Vincennes marked the beginning of higher education in Indiana;

    Whereas, Vincennes University has more than fulfilled the expectations of its founder, William Henry Harrision, the first governor of the Indiana Territory and ninth United States President, to become "the nursery of heroes and statesmen";

    Whereas, Vincennes University was one of the first two-year colleges in the nation and stands today as a model for other two-year colleges throughout the nation;

    Whereas, Vincennes University today provides instruction to more than 9,000 students representing all 92 Indiana counties, 31 states, and 36 foreign countries; and

    Whereas, Vincennes University looks forward to its third century of service to students and the state, including its partnership in the new Community College of Indiana: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the
General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That we congratulate Vincennes University, Indiana's oldest institution of higher learning, on the anniversary of its founding and commend it on 200 years of excellent service to the people.
    SECTION 2. That the citizenry of Indiana is hereby invited to join Vincennes University in contemplating and celebrating this significant bicentennial that honors the beginning of higher education in the State of Indiana.
    SECTION 3. That the Principal Clerk of the Senate shall transmit copies of this Resolution to Dr. Phillip M. Summers, President of Vincennes University, and Lynn Jongleux, Chairperson of the VU Board of Trustees.
