SENATE RESOLUTION


     MR. PRESIDENT:

        I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION to honor Sandra P. Baker for her receipt of a 2000-2001 Crystal Apple Award and for her many years of teaching excellence.

    Whereas, the objective of the Crystal Apple Award is to give special recognition to a teacher for outstanding professionalism, dedication, and consistent performance;

    Whereas, Sandra Baker of the School Town of Munster, Munster, Indiana, has exemplified all of the above qualities as a premier teacher in civic education;

    Whereas, as evidence of her supreme efforts, Sandra has led her class to superior rankings in the regional and state "We the People" constitutional hearings for eight consecutive years. A pioneer of the "We the People" program, Sandra has presented this stellar program to various teachers across the nation, and her school's program has been recognized by judges and coaches as a model site;

    Whereas, Sandra's quality leadership in civic education also led to her membership on the committee to establish

national civic education standards;

    Whereas, additionally, Sandra has rendered international educational support to former communist nations, including the Czech Republic and Bosnia, to provide established methods for teachers to educate students regarding principles of democracy. To improve reading opportunities for its citizens, Sandra also established the "Books for Bosnia" program to establish and English lending library in that country;

    Whereas, for over 15 years, Sandra has also taught full- time magnet classes for academically talented 5th grade students, and she has presented her success at the National Association for Gifted Children Convention; and

    Whereas, as a pinnacle moment in her teaching career, Sandra was recognized by the American Lawyers Auxiliary as the 1995 Elementary School Teacher of the Year: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:



    SECTION 1. That the Indiana State Senate congratulates Sandra P. Baker for her commitment to teaching excellence and public education upon the occasion of her receipt of a 2000-2001 Crystal Apple Award.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Sandra P. Baker.
