     Whereas, Mr. Brooks will be presented with the Governor's Arts Award on April 23, 2001 during a public ceremony;

     Whereas, The Governor's Arts Award began in 1973 to recognize Hoosiers that have made significant contributions to the arts in the state and/or national level and to increase public awareness of the arts and how the arts affect our everyday lives;

     Whereas, this award has been given to various arts organizations, individual artists, business and civic leaders, volunteers, and art educators;

     Whereas, Mr. Brooks, a gifted stage and screen performer, known for his role as Commander Cisco on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" has gone the extra mile to share his talents and experiences with students across the country;

    Whereas, Mr. Brooks has many artistic credits including directing productions with the New York Shakespeare Theatre, Washington's Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and London's West End Theatre; narrating numerous documentaries including the highly rated Discovery Channel mini-series "Walking With Dinosaurs," as well as IMAX films such as Africa's Elephant Kingdom, Greatest Places, and Oceans in Space;

    Whereas, Mr. Brooks has worked tirelessly with the Smithsonian Institute's Program in Black American Culture and has brought major historical figures to American television;

    Whereas, Mr. Brooks has been the recipient of many awards including the NAACP Image Award, the Indiana Black Expo Black Achievers Award, the Wright Overstreet Award, the Millennium Award from the Folger Shakespeare Theatre, the Carter G. Woodson Foundation's Distinguished Artist Award, and the Young Audiences of D.C. award for Lifelong Commitment to Arts and Education;

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
