A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Mayor Duane W.
Dedelow Jr. and the City of Hammond, recipient of the 2001
Governor's Arts Awards.
Whereas, Mayor Duane W. Dedelow and the City of Hammond
will be presented with the Governor's Arts Award on April 23, 2001
during a public ceremony;
Whereas, The Governor's Arts Award began in 1973 to
recognize Hoosiers that have made significant contributions to the
arts in the state and/or national level and to increase public
awareness of the arts and how the arts affect our everyday lives;
Whereas, this award has been given to various arts
organizations, individual artists, business and civic leaders,
volunteers, and art educators;
Whereas, during his administration, Mayor Dedelow has been
supportive of the arts and established cultural priorities for the city of
Hammond;
Whereas, since taking office, Mayor Dedelow has overseen the formation of the Hammond Commission for the Arts and Humanities, has committed municipal funds to finance the Hammond Rotunda (a public architectural sculpture and plaza), and earmarked municipal funds to support the teaching of visual arts at Substation 9 (the Northern Indiana Arts Association's satellite classroom in downtown Hammond);
Whereas, according to Mayor Dedelow, "The arts encourage
dialogue and exchange and can provide a tool for economic
revitalization. And more important, with education through the arts,
there is potential for students to achieve greater academic success and
discover an outlet to develop their talents to the fullest extent.":
Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the General Assembly hereby recognizes and
congratulates Mayor Dedelow and the City of Hammond for its
dedication to the arts and for being a recipient of the 2001
Governor's Arts Awards.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to Mayor Dedelow and the City of Hammond.
