Synopsis: Coroner continuing education and training. Requires a county coroner to attend annually one continuing education and training program offered by the coroners training board. Provides that a county coroner who fails to attend a required continuing education and training program is liable to the county for up to $500.

    A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning local government.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

SOURCE: IC 36-2-14-14; (02)IN1205.1.1. -->     SECTION 1. IC 36-2-14-14 IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2002]: Sec. 14. (a) The coroner or his representative shall, when invited, attend meetings of the commission on forensic sciences for consultation on matters concerning the interests of the commission, the office of coroner, or both. The expenses of the coroner or his representative shall be paid from the general fund of the county that the coroner serves, but may not exceed the statutory amount per day for meals and lodging and a sum for mileage at a rate determined by the county fiscal body.
     (b) It is a duty of the coroner to attend each year at least one (1) continuing education and training program offered by the coroners training board. The expenses of the coroner attending a continuing education and training program shall be paid from the general fund of the county that the coroner serves but may not exceed the statutory amount per day for meals and lodging and a sum for mileage at a rate determined by the county fiscal body.

AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2002]: Sec. 21. A coroner who fails to perform a duty imposed by section 14(b) of this chapter is liable to the county in a sum of not more than five hundred dollars ($500), to be recovered in a civil action brought in the name of the county.
