A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the establishment of an
interim study committee to study the overall safety of nightclubs and
similar venues and the use of indoor pyrotechnics.
Whereas, In light of the recent tragedy at The Station in
West Warwick, Rhode Island, on February 20, 2003, where
97 people died, it behooves the state of Indiana to investigate
the safety practices of nightclubs and similar venues;
Whereas, Fire has always been an ever-present danger in
nightclubs;
Whereas, Pyrotechnic displays are extremely popular
during concerts and other forms of entertainment and, where
indoor pyrotechnics are used, the proper inspection and
licensing must be in place before any pyrotechnic display is
permitted;
Whereas, Another contributing factor in deaths caused by
fires in nightclubs and other similar venues is the occupant
capacity and number of exits from the club. Care must be
taken to ensure that sufficient exits are always provided; and
Whereas, The state of Indiana takes the safety of its citizens
very seriously and wishes to ensure that all precautions are
being taken to prevent the loss of lives in future nightclub
accidents: Therefore,
