SENATE RESOLUTION


     MR. PRESIDENT:

        I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION to honor the Kokomo Rescue Mission on its 50th anniversary and recognizing the Mission for serving the Kokomo area by providing the basic physical needs of life and spiritual care to homeless and needy people.

    Whereas, the Kokomo Rescue Mission has provided free food, clothing, furniture, household goods and emergency financial aid to the homeless and needy residents of the Kokomo area for half a century;

    Whereas, on February 23, 1953 Kokomo Rescue Mission opened its doors in a small storefront at 115 South Union Street in Kokomo, and has provided services continuously 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout its 50 years;

    Whereas, in 1979, a shelter for homeless families called the Family House was opened adjacent to the Kokomo Rescue Mission headquarters;

    Whereas, in 1981, Kokomo Rescue Mission opened its dining room to the public twice daily, and since that time has served over one million meals free of charge;


    Whereas, in 1992, the Board of Directors endorsed "Operation Moscow," an outreach to help the people of Moscow, Russia establish rescue missions;

    Whereas, in 1998, Kokomo Rescue Mission opened a new $1.9 million headquarters building which houses the administration, the dining room, chapel and men's shelter;

    Whereas, in 2000, Kokomo Rescue Mission purchased a building at 929 North Main Street, called Open Arms, for the relocation and expansion of its ministry to homeless women and families;

    Whereas, after certification by the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions in 2001, in May 2002, Kokomo Rescue Mission went on to achieve the AGRM's highest level of endorsement, becoming a "Certified Excellent" rescue mission;

    Whereas, Kokomo Rescue Mission has a holiday ministry, providing a Great Thanksgiving Banquet for hundreds of people each year on Thanksgiving Day and assists needy families in the Kokomo area at Christmas with boxes of toys and gifts, food, paper products, and toiletries;

    Whereas, volunteers give selflessly of themselves and their time to the ministry of Kokomo Rescue Mission, donating over 13,500 hours in 2002;

    Whereas, in 2002, Kokomo Rescue Mission provided 19,000 nights of shelter, served 84,362 meals, helped 3,500 people with groceries and gave assistance to 885 families at Christmas; and

    Whereas, Kokomo Rescue Mission is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a donor appreciation banquet on April 28,

2003 at the Kokomo Country Club: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana State Senate congratulates and honors the Kokomo Rescue Mission for its dedication and tireless service to aid homeless and needy people.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Robert M. Cox, Executive Director and David Boss, Associate Director of the Kokomo Rescue Mission.
