A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating Corporal Steve Spadafora
of the South Bend Police Department on receiving the national
Veterans of Foreign Wars' J. Edgar Hoover Gold Medal Award for
outstanding service in the field of law enforcement.

MR. PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating Corporal Steve
Spadafora of the South Bend Police Department on receiving the
national Veterans of Foreign Wars' J. Edgar Hoover Gold Medal Award
for outstanding service in the field of law enforcement.
Whereas, Cpl. Steven Spadafora was nominated for the VFW
award by Capt. Darryl Boykins of the South Bend P.D., who detailed
Cpl. Spadafora's actions in rescuing a suicidal woman from a gas-filled
home;
Whereas, Cpl. Spadafora received the award on April 6, 2002, at
an award's banquet held in Arlington, Virginia;
Whereas, Cpl. Spadafora was honored by the American Red Cross
and was nominated for the American Red Cross George A. Cooper
Hero Hall of Fame award for valor;
Whereas, Cpl. Spadafora received the South Bend Police
Department's 2001 Employee of the Year Award;
Whereas, Cpl. Robert Culp described Cpl. Spadafora as "a very
level-headed, very controlled, intelligent officer who makes decisions
well under pressure";
Whereas, Cpl. Stephen Smith stated that Cpl. Spadafora is "the
kind of guy who could get this kind of award any year because he is
consistently good";
Whereas, Cpl. Spadafora graduated from the Indiana Law
Enforcement Academy with honors.
SECTION 1. That the Senate congratulate Cpl. Steve Spadafora
on receiving the national Veterans of Foreign Wars' J. Edgar Hoover
Gold Medal Award for outstanding service in the field of law
enforcement.
SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate shall transmit
copies of this Resolution to Cpl. Spadafora's wife and two children.
