Synopsis: Technology textbooks. Requires the governing body of a school corporation to purchase classroom sets of technology textbooks for students to use in school instead of requiring students to rent or purchase the textbooks. Allows the governing body to: (1) charge a reasonable user fee to a student for use of the classroom set of textbooks; and (2) adopt and purchase new technology textbooks every three years.

    A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning education.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

SOURCE: IC 20-26-12-29; (06)IN0233.1.1. -->     SECTION 1. IC 20-26-12-29 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2006]: Sec. 29. (a) This section applies only to technology textbooks.
    (b) The governing body shall purchase a sufficient supply of textbooks for each classroom in which the subject of the textbook will be taught in the school corporation.

     (c) A student in a class that uses a classroom set of textbooks:
        (1) is not required to purchase or rent the textbook;
        (2) may use a classroom copy of the textbook while in school; and
        (3) may, with the permission of the teacher, take a classroom copy of the textbook home when necessary.
    (d) The governing body may establish a reasonable user fee for each student who uses a classroom copy of a textbook. The total amount of the user fees paid by each student using a textbook may not exceed the amount necessary to recover the cost of the textbook

over a three (3) year period. A student to whom IC 20-33-5-3 applies is not required to pay the user fee.
     (e) Notwithstanding IC 20-20-5, a school corporation may adopt and purchase technology textbooks once every three (3) years.
