RESOLUTION

        A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing the achievements of the Hulman-George families.

    Whereas, Hulman and Company was founded in 1850 in Terre Haute and is still owned and operated by the Hulman family, now in its sixth generation;

    Whereas, Hulman and Company is known for producing Clabber Girl Baking Powder, the largest selling baking powder in the United States;

    Whereas, The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was purchased in 1945 by Terre Haute businessman Anton "Tony" Hulman, Jr, and he began transforming the track into the best racing facility in the world;

    Whereas, 33 outstanding drivers compete in the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, the world's greatest sports spectacle, as more than 300,000 spectators watch and cheer;

    Whereas, The track is recognized as an important test course and proving grounds for motor car improvements such as high compression engines, four-wheel brakes, experimental fuels and lubricants, low pressure tires, and many other innovations;

    Whereas, The members of the racing fraternity continue to make important contributions each year to the development of tires, petroleum products, spark plugs, piston rings, turbochargers, suspension systems, and aerodynamic

designs, all of which have increased the safety, performance, and comfort of modern passenger cars;

    Whereas, Upon the death of Tony Hulman in October 1977, Mari Hulman George served as Chairman of the Board and Anton "Tony" George served as President and Chief Executive Officer;

    Whereas, In 1994, Tony George founded the Indy Racing League to preserve the traditions and excitement of America's open-wheel racing;

    Whereas, The Allstate 400 was first held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1994 and has become the largest attended NASCAR event in the United States. Six years later, the United States Grand Prix first appeared at the IMS;

    Whereas, The combined economic impact of the Indianapolis 500, the Allstate 400, and the United States Grand Prix exceeds $727 million, the equivalent of three Super Bowls, each year;

    Whereas, Always forward thinking, Tony George began using a blend of 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent methanol in the 2006 racing season to fuel the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series, and, beginning with the 2007 racing season, all cars will be fueled with 100 percent ethanol;

    Whereas, As an agricultural state, ethanol will help to drive Indiana's economic development and add value to agriculture;

    Whereas, The use of ethanol will also help to move our nation toward energy independence;

    Whereas, In February 2005, Tony George and his wife Laura founded Vision Racing LLC to help record the Hulman-George family success over the past 60 years and ensure that they remain a world leader in motorsports entertainment;

    Whereas, In an attempt to bring "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" to more Hoosier homes, Tony George is offering

free online video to fans during May;

    Whereas, The Hulman-George family has been generous to many causes in Indianapolis and Terre Haute, supporting educational and cultural institutions, health research, hospitals, and animal causes, among others;

    Whereas, The Hulman-George family supports Indiana and helps provide jobs, directly and indirectly, for thousands of Hoosiers;

    Whereas, The Speedway has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975, was named a National Historic Landmark in 1987, and is the home of the magnificent Hall of Fame Museum presenting one of the world's largest and most varied collections of cars;

    Whereas, The 500 mile race has long been a part of Indiana, as much a part of the Hoosier state as fields of corn, steel mills, and the Wabash River; and

    Whereas, It is fitting that we congratulate Tony George and his family as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway prepares for the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500 mile race: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
