honoring Senator Samuel Smith, Jr.
upon his retirement from the Indiana State Senate.

I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring Senator Samuel
Smith, Jr. upon his retirement from the Indiana State Senate.
Whereas, Senator Samuel Smith Jr. was first elected to the Indiana
State Senate to represent Senate District 2 and the people of Lake
County in 1998;
Whereas, Senator Smith is a successful business man and
respected community leader and has served his Lake County
constituency throughout his 10 year tenure;
Whereas, Senator Smith has served on numerous legislative
standing committees and interim committees during his tenure,
covering a wide range of topics. He most recently served as Ranking
Minority member on the Senate Insurance & Financial Institutions
committee and also as a member on the Appointments & Claims, Local
Government & Elections, Judiciary, and Rules and Legislative
Procedure committees and is Senate Democrat Caucus Chairman and
a member of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus;
Whereas, Senator Smith will be resigning from the Indiana State
Senate in order to expand his business;
Whereas, Senator Smith is a committed husband to his wife, Diane
and a devoted father to his daughters Emerald and Danielle; and
Whereas, Senator Smith, with his hospitality and generosity, will
be felt by his retirement for many years to come; Therefore:
SECTION 2. That the secretary of the senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to Senator Smith; daughters Emerald Smith and Danielle Smith; mother, Griselda Smith; and brother, Eric Metcalf.
