SENATE RESOLUTION



MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

        A SENATE RESOLUTION urging the legislative council to assign to the commission on courts the duty of studying the methods of providing financial support to local probation departments.

    Whereas, Probation officers supervise offenders who are placed on probation instead of being sent to prison;

    Whereas, Probation officers spend much of their time working for the courts investigating the backgrounds of the accused, writing presentence reports, and recommending sentences;

    Whereas, However, the cost of running a probation office is a large expenditure for local governments; and

    Whereas, It is, therefore, prudent at this time to study the methods of providing financial support to local probation departments: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. That the legislative council is urged to assign to the commission on courts the duty of studying the methods of providing financial support to local probation departments.
    SECTION 2. That the commission shall present its findings and recommendations in a final report when directed to do so by the legislative council.
    SECTION 3. That the Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed

to transmit a copy of this resolution to the legislative council through the executive director of the legislative services agency.
