    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Elinor Ostrom for being awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.

    Whereas, Dr. Elinor Ostrom was born in 1933 in Los Angeles, California; and

    Whereas, Dr. Elinor Ostrom earned her Bachelors degree, Masters degree and doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles; and

    Whereas, Dr. Elinor Ostrom founded the Center for the Study of Institutional Diversity at Arizona State University; and

    Whereas, Dr. Elinor Ostrom joined the faculty of Indiana University in 1965; and

    Whereas, Dr. Elinor Ostrom co-founded the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis; and

    Whereas, Dr. Elinor Ostrom became the first woman to chair the Department of Political Science at Indiana University; and

    Whereas, Dr. Elinor Ostrom served as the president of the American Political Science Association from 1996 to

1997; and

    Whereas, Dr. Elinor Ostrom is the Arthur F. Bentley Professor of Political Science in the College of Arts and Sciences and a professor in Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs; and

    Whereas, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Dr. Elinor Ostrom the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences “for her analysis of economic governance, especially” how common property can be successfully managed by user associations; Therefore

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes Dr. Elinor Ostrom's achievements and contributions to the State of Indiana, Indiana University and the study of economics and congratulates her for winning the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the Indiana House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Dr. Elinor Ostrom.
