    A HOUSE RESOLUTION to honor Lance Corporal Joshua Birchfield.

    Whereas, Joshua Birchfield was born May 24, 1985, to parents Bruce Birchfield and Michelle Hacker, and passed away on February 19, 2010, at the age of 24; and

Whereas, A 2004 graduate of Westville High School, Joshua Birchfield decided to serve his country as a member of its armed forces, enlisting with the U.S. Marine Corps in 2008 and achieving the rank of Lance Corporal; and

Whereas, LCpl Birchfield served as a rifleman with the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force; and

Whereas, LCpl Birchfield was sent to Afghanistan on his first deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; and

Whereas, While in Afghanistan, LCpl Birchfield bravely fought

in one of the biggest offensives our military has waged in that country, an offensive that has been successful in dislodging many Taliban fighters; and

Whereas, LCpl Birchfield was killed by enemy fire while on patrol in the Taliban stronghold of the Farah Province; and

Whereas, For his valiant efforts, LCpl Birchfield was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and the NATO Medal; and

Whereas, A young man lost too soon, LCpl Birchfield's memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and community; Therefore

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives expresses its sincere condolences to the family of Joshua Birchfield and its appreciation for his time of service to the state of Indiana and the United States of America.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to his parents, Bruce Burchfield and Ron and Michelle Hacker; his sisters, Rachael and Emily Birchfield; his grandmother, Frances Birchfield; his step-grandparents, Howard and Martha Hacker; and step-great-grandmother, Mary Dickinson.
