A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating Matthew
Shockley, 2009 State High School Principal of the Year.
Whereas, Matthew Shockley has been an outstanding
educator for 21 years. He worked as a classroom teacher for
5 years, a school administrator for 8 years, an assistant
principal for 4 years, and is currently serving as the
Principal at Center Grove High School in Greenwood,
Indiana, a position he has held for the last 4 years;
Whereas, Shockley has implemented several programs
and initiatives at Center Grove High School. He increased
the number of students enrolled in Honors and AP courses,
and the availability and advancement of technology
throughout the school;
Whereas, Shockley was integral in the creation of the
first Small Learning Community, the Early College at Center
Grove, and the New Technology High School;
Whereas, Each year, Shockley inspires his students to
participate in the Junior Day of Caring, an event which
encourages students to give back to the local community;
Whereas, Shockley has been a leader in the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP), the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the
Association for School and Curriculum Development
(ASCD), and the National Staff Development Council
(NSDC);
Whereas, Shockley's community involvement extends to
the Mount Auburn United Methodist Church, the Leadership
of Johnson County, and the Johnson County Habitat for
Humanity;
Whereas, Shockley has been nominated for many awards
by his peers. The Indiana Association of Student Councils
recognized Shockley as the Administrator of the Year in
2003. He was also named Influential Staff Member at both
Tipton and Center Grove High Schools;
Whereas, After naming Shockley the District High School
Principal of District 9,
the Indiana Association of School
Principals further recognized Shockley as the 2009 State
High School Principal of the Year; and
Whereas, Matthew Shockley's leadership and service to
others is an inspiration to Hoosiers everywhere. Shockley's
philosophy that leadership is about serving others is
evidenced by his many accomplishments and achievements:
Therefore,
SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly congratulates and
honors Matthew Shockley as the 2009 State High School Principal of
the Year. Recognizing his outstanding work as an educator for 21
years, the Indiana General Assembly wishes Matthew Shockley
continued success in his future endeavors.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to
transmit a copy of this Resolution to Matthew Shockley, Center Grove
High School, and the Indiana Association of School Principals.
