    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Commander Ralph Tolan for his outstanding service as the State Commander of the American Legion Department of Indiana.

    Whereas, During the Vietnam War, Ralph Tolan served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter mechanic, crew chief, and machine gunner;

    Whereas, After being honorably discharged in 1971, Tolan came back to his hometown of Indianapolis and joined the American Legion;

    Whereas, Tolan is a 37-year member of Speedway American Legion Post 500, serving in almost every office available. Tolan served as the Sergeant-at-Arms, First Vice Commander, Post Commander, and as 11th District Commander;

    Whereas, Tolan was also the chairman of all four permanent department commissions: Americanism, Children & Youth, Internal Affairs, and Rehabilitation;

    Whereas, The National Organization of the American Legion recognized Tolan for his outstanding leadership skills, service as a long-time member of the Americanism Commission, and service on several National Convention committees held in Indianapolis in 1991 and 1995;


    
    Whereas, Tolan was elected to serve as 2008-2009 State Commander of the American Legion Department of Indiana, at the organizations' 90th annual state convention on July 13, 2008, in Indianapolis, Indiana;

    Whereas, Tolan's tenure as Commander of the American Legion Department of Indiana includes his two special projects: the remodeling of a full dorm at the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children's Home at Knightstown, and strengthening the Hoosier Boys State program by allocating more funds to their scholarship program;

    Whereas, Tolan's family includes his wife Chrissie, their two children, and their three grandchildren, who are all members of the American Legion Family; and

    Whereas, Commander Ralph Tolan's motto is “Soaring Together,” which encapsulates his dedication to mutual support, open communication, and teamwork: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate     of the General Assembly

of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives     concurring:


    SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly honors Commander Ralph Tolan for his outstanding service as the State Commander of the American Legion Department of Indiana.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Ralph Tolan and the American Legion Department of Indiana.
