SENATE RESOLUTION


     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating Katie Kern on earning the Girl Scout Gold Award.
    
     Whereas, Katie Kern earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts;

    Whereas, Only 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the prestigious Gold Award;

    Whereas, In order to be eligible for the award, a Girl Scout must be between 14 and 18 years old. She must earn the Girl Scout Gold Leadership Award, which requires girls to complete 30 hours of leadership work, as well as complete three Interest Projects and one Focus Book relevant to their project;

    Whereas, The Girl Scout Gold Career Award must be earned as well, which requires girls to complete 40 hours of career exploration;

    Whereas, Girls must also complete the Girl Scout Gold 4Bs Challenge, which requires girls to assess their community and its needs, and develop a vision for change.

Up to 15 hours work on the 4Bs Challenge may be counted towards the 65 hours for the service project;

    Whereas, Once these steps have been completed, girls must complete a community service project that extends beyond the Girl Scout organization. A minimum of 65 hours must be spent planning and actually completing the project;

    Whereas, Katie's 65 hour project was “Bundles of Love,” a Christmas brunch at her church where she sold 85 tickets at $20 a piece. Katie used the proceeds to purchase blankets and personal supplies for the homeless. She passed out a majority of the supplies in downtown Chicago, Illinois, and the remainder were donated to a men's homeless shelter in Valparaiso, Indiana;

    Whereas, In addition to earning her Gold Award, Katie has earned a Silver Award, Leadership Award, Career Award, and several Community Service Awards;

    Whereas, Katie is a Varsity Cheerleader, Varsity Singer, and Youth Deacon. She sings in the praise band and has attended and served on the Awakening team for four years. She also participates in National Honor Society and will graduate with an Academic Honors Diploma;

    Whereas, Katie has devoted countless hours serving her community and leading the next generation of Girl Scouts; and

    Whereas, Katie Kern will receive her Girl Scout Gold Award at the Girl Scout Gold Award Ceremony held on May 2, 2010: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate congratulates Katie Kern on earning the Girl Scout Gold Award.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Cynthia Petty, Girl Scout Leader to Troop #427.
