        A RESOLUTION recognizing the Weir Cook Memorial Project.
    

    Whereas, Harvey Weir Cook, a Hoosier, was born in Wilkinson, Indiana, graduated from Anderson High School, and attended DePauw University in Greencastle;

    Whereas, Harvey Weir Cook enlisted in the aviation section of the Army Signal Corps in World War I and was assigned to Captain Eddie Rickenbacker's Squadron where he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross with an Oak Leaf Cluster;

    Whereas, After the war, Harvey Weir Cook helped to form the United States Army's U.S. Mail Service and was one of its first pilots;



    Whereas, Harvey Weir Cook was a pioneer in bringing Indianapolis its first principal airport, was involved in the development of the first dive bombing site for the Army, and fought for military recognition of the airplane's potential;

    Whereas, Harvey Weir Cook served as director and vice president of the American Legion National Aeronautics Commission in Indianapolis and later became the first American Legion National Director of Aviation;

    Whereas, Harvey Weir Cook helped to convince the Smithsonian Institution to recognize the Wright Brothers' flight at Kitty Hawk as the first powered aircraft flight;

    Whereas, Harvey Weir Cook, while a member of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce Airport Siting Committee, helped pick the site for Indianapolis' first airport and served as the airport's first manager; and

    Whereas, After the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Harvey Weir Cook re-enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was assigned as commander of air bases in New Caledonia, in the Southwest Pacific, where he lost his life while training young pilots for combat: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives recognizes the Weir Cook Memorial Project and its mission, in hopes that all of its projects are successfully completed, especially the "Coins for Cook" project that will help build a life-size statue of Colonel Cook and have it placed inside the Weir Cook Terminal at the Indianapolis International Airport.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Christy Broady, President of the Weir Cook Memorial Project, Inc.
