    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating Brenda Roberts on her upcoming Carnegie Hall debut.

    Whereas, Brenda Roberts, a native of Lowell, Indiana, has riveted international opera lovers for decades as a dramatic soprano and will thrill New Yorkers when she makes her Carnegie Hall debut on February 25, 2011;

    Whereas, Having recently completed performances with the Bonn Opera in Germany, Ms. Roberts will perform her recital at Carnegie Hall titled, "Dramatic Songs from the German High-Romantic _ the works of Mahler, Wagner, Strauss, and Schreker";

    Whereas, Ms. Roberts distinguished career as a dramatic soprano has included the stages of the most famous opera houses in the world, including La Scala in Milan, Italy and the New York Metropolitan Opera;

    Whereas, Ms. Roberts wanted to be an opera singer since she was eight years old, and began taking voice lessons a couple of years later;

    Whereas, Ms. Roberts earned bachelors and masters degrees from Northwestern University, where she studied under Hermanus Baer. Baer taught her a Swedish technique that lowers the larynx and allows her large and opulent voice

to emerge much to the surprise of those who have never heard her sing;

    Whereas, Ms. Roberts' voice and dramatic art have been graciously compared to those of the late Birgit Nilsson, with whom she shared a stage and friendship;

    Whereas, Ms. Roberts has long been an aficionado of the great German composer, Richard Wagner, and has the distinction of being the youngest to perform Brunnhilde at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany, appearing there at the behest of Wolfgang Wagner, the grandson of Richard Wagner;

    Whereas, In October 2010, Ms. Roberts was honored by the Gottlob-Firck-Gesellschaft in Germany for her outstanding achievements in opera;

    Whereas, Ms. Roberts is publishing a book on vocal technique and is considering teaching in the United States. She taught for 11 years at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany;

    Whereas, Ms. Roberts is excited about her upcoming performance at Carnegie Hall, her first at the historic venue. She looks forward to singing the works of Mahler, Wagner, Strauss, and Schreker, saying, "I've sung Verdi a lot and Puccini, but I always wanted to sing the German repertoire"; and

    Whereas, Brenda Roberts continues to have a tremendous career as a dramatic soprano and her upcoming performance at Carnegie Hall is bound to be a great evening: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate     of the General Assembly

of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives     concurring:




    SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly congratulates Brenda Roberts on her upcoming Carnegie Hall debut.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Brenda Roberts.
