SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION No. _____

    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing Nora Taylor Hart on being the last living member of Crispus Attucks High School's first graduating class.

    Whereas, Nora Taylor Hart graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1928, part of the first graduating class in school history;

    Whereas, Crispus Attucks High School opened in 1927 as the first all African-American high school in the state of Indiana;

    Whereas, Hart is the only living member of her graduating class and is Crispus Attucks' oldest living alumna;

    Whereas, Hart faced many challenges in becoming one of Crispus Attucks' oldest and most recognizable students, but a top-notch education and her parents' watchful eyes helped her overcome segregation and the lack of women's rights;

    Whereas, After graduating from Crispus Attucks, Hart enrolled in the Arthur Jordan Conservatory. In 1933, she joined Sigma Gamma Rho sorority. In 1935, Hart graduated from the music school, which is now part of Butler University;

    Whereas, Hart returned to Butler, earning a master of science degree in teaching in 1965;

    Whereas, Hart worked for 16 years as a 3rd grade teacher for the Indianapolis Public School system;

    Whereas, Hart's only child, Walter, said his mother's trials helped prepare him for his own. When Walter attended Knoxville College, he was not permitted to play in certain orchestras and on certain golf courses. His mother's wisdom helped him deal with those challenges and the many other challenges that come with life; and

    Whereas, As the school's oldest living alumna, and last living member of the inaugural graduating class, Nora Taylor Hart continues to be an inspirational figure to Crispus Attucks High School, the city of Indianapolis, and to Hoosiers everywhere: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate     of the General Assembly
