SENATE RESOLUTION


     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION to honor the Bloomington Township Fire Department's 40 years of service to the community.
                                

     Whereas, Department established in 1970 and went into service midnight January 1, 1971;
    Whereas, Trustee Jim Dawson was the first CPR instructor in Monroe County;
    Whereas, Sadly, the department lost two firefighters in the line of duty. In 1973, Jim McHenry died while enroute to a fire, and in 1978 George Ringer died of a heart attack while on a fire scene;
    Whereas, The Livingston family is synonymous with the Bloomington Township Fire Department. Charter member Dale Livingston served as chief for many years. His son, Faron, joined the department in 1973, and has served as chief since 1991;
    Whereas, In 1982, Trustee Jim Dawson and the township board approved and built a second fire station on Vernal Pike;
    Whereas, The Department became the HazMat Regional Response Team in 1990 for a seven-county area;
    Whereas, The department purchased 2 semi- automatic defibrillators in 1993, becoming the first defibrillator equipped first-response agency in Monroe County;
    Whereas, In 1998, became the first township department to purchase a Quint. This truck performs five major functions: water tank, pumps, aerial ladder, ground ladders and hose;
    Whereas, Also in 1998, the department purchased adjoining property to the fire station which included a house which become offices and a training area. In 2006 a flashover chamber was installed and in 2007 the multi- scenario training field was completed, including a three story “burn building.” The department developed into a state recognized training academy, drawing firefighters from around Indiana as well as northern Kentucky;
    Whereas, Through the years, the Northside Exchange Club has recognized the following Bloomington Township firefighters: Ludger “Lu” Aubin, 1974; Dale Livingston, 1981; the department as a whole, 2002; Faron Livingston, 2007; and Clay Edwards, 2009;
    Whereas, In 2001, Trustee Nancy Brinegar oversaw a major expansion and renovation of fire headquarters, including a training room that holds 45 people, a workout

room, sleeping areas for the 24-hour firefighters and a greatly expanded vehicle bay;
    Whereas, In 2008, the department became the first department to have a firefighter certified as a personal trainer to address firefighter fitness;
    Whereas, Chief Livingston was named the 2009 State of Indiana Firefighter of the Year by the American Legion; and
    Whereas, In 2010, the department purchased the first engine in Monroe County that uses compressed foam and water to more quickly extinguish fires and reduce water damage to structures; therefore:


Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

SECTION 1. That the Senate of the Indiana General Assembly does hereby recognize the Bloomington Township Fire Department for its service to the community.
SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate shall transmit copies of this resolution to the Bloomington Township Fire Department.
