Synopsis: Commission for higher education. Allows the commission for higher education to approve or disapprove existing or new associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degrees, or programs leading to a certificate or other indication of accomplishment. Requires each state educational institution to review its undergraduate degree programs to determine the number of credit hours required for the degree and to report the results of the review to the commission, including a justification for any associate degree program of more than 60 hours or baccalaureate degree program of more than 120 hours.

HOUSE BILL No. 1220



    A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning higher education.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

SOURCE: IC 21-18-9-5; (12)HB1220.1.1. -->     SECTION 1. IC 21-18-9-5, AS AMENDED BY P.L.169-2011, SECTION 21, IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2012]: Sec. 5. The commission may approve or disapprove the:
        (1) establishment of any new branches, regional or other campuses, or extension centers;
        (2) establishment of any new college or school; or
        (3) offering on any campus of any proposed or existing:
            (A) additional associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree; or
            (B) additional program leading to a certificate or other indication of accomplishment.
SOURCE: IC 21-18-9-7; (12)HB1220.1.2. -->     SECTION 2. IC 21-18-9-7 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2012]: Sec. 7. (a) Each state educational institution shall review each undergraduate degree program offered or proposed by the state educational institution to determine the number of credit hours required for the degree and report the results to the

commission. If a degree program requires more than:
        (1) sixty (60) credit hours for an associate degree; or
        (2) one hundred twenty (120) credit hours for a baccalaureate degree;
the state educational institution must provide justification to the commission in the report for the additional credit hours required.
    (b) The commission shall require a periodic review and report of the credit hours required for degree programs under this section.
