Second Regular Session 117th General Assembly (2012)

    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing cancer research participants.

    Whereas, The only means to find a cure for cancer is through clinical cancer research;

    Whereas, Patients that participate in cancer research are necessary to win the War on Cancer and ease the burden of this disease on future cancer patients;

    Whereas, For many patients, participation in cancer research is their final societal contribution in the War on Cancer, due to their desire to help others, their trust in their health care providers, and a pioneering spirit that hopes to see a better day;

    Whereas, While Indiana ranks 40th in overall mortality from cancer, Black and Hispanic incidence of cancer rates remain disproportionately high;

    Whereas, Cancer research is the largest and fastest growing area of disease research, and Hoosier companies, care providers, and academic centers have been at the forefront, providing investment in jobs and research infrastructure to and for Hoosiers for decades;

    Whereas, Only 3-5% of cancer patients participate in clinical trials, making it a very select, courageous, and altruistic group, demonstrating that if we find more participants, we can make faster breakthroughs;

    Whereas, Since the War on Cancer began 40 years ago, many medical gains have been made, such as those of Dr. Lawrence Einhorn of Indiana University in the area of testicular cancer; and,

    Whereas, All cancer patients who have received a benefit from cancer care, ranging from a better quality of life to a longer life, owe a debt of gratitude to those doctors, nurses, scientists, and most especially patients who have conducted or participated in research: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors and recognizes the contributions of those Hoosiers who have helped fight the War on Cancer as cancer researchers or as patients serving as research participants.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to the Hoosier Oncology Group, the Indiana Cancer Consortium, the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center, the Great Lakes Division of the American Cancer Society, the Purdue University Cancer Center, and Eli Lilly and Company.
