        A HOUSE RESOLUTION urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the 3.5 mile section of State Road 8 between State Road 327 and the Auburn city limits as "The John Martin Smith Memorial Highway".
    

    Whereas, Born on August 17, 1939, John Martin Smith was a sixth generation native of DeKalb County;

    Whereas, John Martin Smith lived in Butler during his youth and then moved to the family farm;

    Whereas, John Martin Smith graduated from Butler High School and attended Indiana University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Business and a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree with Distinction from the

School of Law;

    Whereas, John Martin Smith established a law practice in Auburn where he later practiced law with his son Thompson;

    Whereas, John Martin Smith had a passion for state and local history;

    Whereas, John Martin Smith was the founder of the DeKalb County Historical Society, served on the Board of Trustees and as President of the Indiana Historical Society, and served as the DeKalb County Historian;

    Whereas, John Martin Smith was the founder of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum and the National Automotive & Truck Museum of the United States (NATMUS) and was on the Board of Directors and served as Regional Vice President of the American Truck Historical Society;

    Whereas, John Martin Smith wrote numerous books and articles on historical subjects, was the author or editor of 17 books including the 1,510 page "History of DeKalb County from 1837-1987", which was published in observance of the Sesquicentennial of DeKalb County, and authored six books for Arcadia Publishing, including "Auburn, the Classic City" and "DeKalb County in Vintage Postcards";

    Whereas, John Martin Smith was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Frank O'Bannon and was an Honorary Life Member of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club; and

    Whereas, John Martin Smith was a keeper of history who worked to ensure that all Hoosiers could know their heritage: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives urges the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the 3.5 mile section of State Road 8 between State Road 327 and the Auburn city limits as "The John Martin Smith Memorial Highway".
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of

Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to the family of John Martin Smith and the commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation.
