A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring the first responders
to the Indiana State Fair Grandstand stage collapse on August 13, 2011.
Whereas, On August 13, 2011, hundreds of first responders from
the Indianapolis Fire Department, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police
Department, Indiana State Police, and Emergency Medical Services
arrived at the scene of the Indiana State Fairgrounds in response to a
report of the collapse of the grandstand stage;
Whereas, As thousands of concert attendees attempted to escape
the collapse, dozens of firefighters, police, and emergency medical
technicians raced in to assist the injured, never once pausing to
consider that their own safety was at risk;
Whereas, The rapid arrival of the first responders set the tone for
the entire rescue effort. The leadership and confidence of these first
responders commanded respect and put the injured victims at ease,
knowing their safety was in the hands of knowledgeable professionals;
Whereas, After an unexpected event that yielded a number of
victims that even the most seasoned professionals would find daunting
to attend to at one time, firefighters, police, and emergency medical
technicians were able to locate, triage, treat, and transport forty-six
victims in just one hour;
Whereas, An overwhelming outpouring of assistance was
demonstrated by volunteers and off-duty firemen who arrived on the
scene to assist the rest of the response units. Individuals took on roles
that went far beyond their official duties, accelerating the rescue
efforts; and
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors the heroic
acts of the first responders to the Indiana State Fair tragedy on August
13, 2011.
SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to
transmit a copy of this Resolution to all of the individuals who
responded to the events on August 13, 2011.
