MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION recognizing South Adams
High School and South Adams School Corporation for their
work on the "Dots in Blue Water: Making a World of
Difference" project.
Whereas, The students at South Adams High School
developed and funded a program known as "Dots in Blue
Water: Making a World of Difference" to deliver village-sized
water purifiers to Haiti;
Whereas, The concept behind the project was that students
could learn the same lessons while designing a water
purification system for those in need in the impoverished
country of Haiti, as they could while doing the typical science
labs on electricity and chemistry;
Whereas, This idea was the beginning of the "Dots in Blue
Water: Making a World of Difference" project that would
develop, test, assemble, and deliver automobile battery
powered water purification units to Haiti that could turn
impure water into drinkable water;
Whereas, Members of the research department,
development department, and marketing department reported
to the group each Friday on the progress they were making in
solving the problem;
Whereas, The project soon became a school corporation-
wide effort: science units were developed in electrochemistry,
watershed environmental impact, and microbiology; language
arts students wrote expository essays about Haiti and its
culture, arguing both sides of the United States policy in
sending aid to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake; foreign
language classes translated purifier assembly instructions and
made instructional videos; math students computed materials
costs and analyzed statistics regarding water treatment; music
classes promoted Haitian and Carribean music; and art
students designed posters and T-shirts for fund-raising;
Whereas, During their time in Haiti, the members of the
"Dots in Blue Water: Making a World of Difference" project
assembled five water purifiers and completely installed two
purifiers;
Whereas, One of the purifiers was installed in the village of
Chambrun, providing drinking water to 5,000 people, and the
second purifier was installed on the roof of the school of the
Nehemiah Vision Ministry compound, which will allow over
400 students from the village of Chambrun who are enrolled at
the school, to have access to clean drinking water during the
entire school year;
Whereas, One of the assembled purifiers was installed in
the small, remote village of Bouzi, where poor drinking water
had led to a life-threatening cholera outbreak;
Whereas, The remaining two assembled purifiers will be
installed in an elementary school and an assisted living facility
near the capital of Port-au-Prince; and
Whereas, The students and faculty of the "Dots in Blue
Water: Making a World of Difference" project have helped the
struggling people of Haiti improve their lives and rebuild their
country: Therefore,
