SENATE RESOLUTION


     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION memorializing former Indiana United States Congresswoman, Katie Hall.

    Whereas, Former United States Congresswoman, Katie Hall passed away February 20, 2012;

    Whereas, Katie Hall was born in Mound Bayou, Mississippi in 1938, received her bachelor's degree from Mississippi State, and received her master's degree from Indiana University in Bloomington;

    Whereas, Katie Hall served one term in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1974 to 1976 and later held a seat in the Indiana State Senate from 1976 to 1982;

    Whereas, Katie Hall became the first African-American woman elected to Congress from Indiana when she was elected to Indiana's 1st District in 1982;

    Whereas, While in the U. S. House of Representatives, Hall was one of the sponsors of legislation that established a national holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and
    Whereas, Following a narrow defeat for re-election to

Congress, Hall served as Gary's city clerk from 1988 until 2003: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana State Senate memorializes former United States Congresswoman, Katie Hall.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to trasmit a copy of this resolution to the family of Katie Hall.
