SENATE RESOLUTION

     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION urging the Interim Study Committee on Redistricting to hold meetings outside of Marion County in order to gain public input.

    Whereas, The Interim Study Committee on Redistricting was formed in 2011 to study redistricting and make recommendations on ways to improve the redistricting process;

    Whereas, The Interim Study Committee on Redistricting met twice at the State house in Indianapolis in 2011 to hear presentations from national experts on redistricting, and to examine the intent and language of legislation that would create statutory criteria for redistricting;

    Whereas, The Interim Study Committee on Redistricting is also charged with studying proposals to amend the Constitution of the State of Indiana to establish an independent redistricting commission;

    Whereas, It is important to seek the input of Hoosiers from across the state on important redistricting issues such as identifying communities of interest and ranking of redistricting criteria; and

    Whereas, Amending the Constitution of the State of Indiana is rarely done and therefore not well understood by the public, creating a need for education and public dialogue across the state: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate urges the Interim Study Committee on Redistricting to hold at least three meetings in locations outside of Marion County in order to facilitate the participation of Hoosiers from across the state.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Legislative Council through the Executive Director of the Legislative Services Agency and Julia Vaughn of Common Cause Indiana.
