        A HOUSE RESOLUTION recognizing international partners who have shared goals with the Commonwealth of Azerbaijan.

    Whereas, Over the last 21 years, Azerbaijan has consolidated its sovereignty and political independence and has become an important strategic partner of the United States, both regionally and globally;

    Whereas, More than 100 United States businesses have an established presence in Azerbaijan, including prominent, successful corporations such as ExxonMobil, Ernst & Young, and Coca-Cola;

    Whereas, Azerbaijan is a major supplier of energy

resources to some of the United States' most vulnerable allies, particularly in Eastern Europe;

    Whereas, Azerbaijan has a centuries-long tradition of peaceful coexistence between various ethnic and religious communities and is a critical link for the United States government in its outreach to the Muslim world, as Azerbaijan is one of the few secular countries in the Middle East with a predominately Muslim population that maintains close, friendly ties with Israel;

    Whereas, Azerbaijan has been a loyal supporter of the United States' "War on Terror," providing troops and logistical support for NATO operations in Afghanistan;

    Whereas, The appointment of Azerbaijan to a nonpermanent seat on the United Nations Security Council places the nation alongside the United States as a leader in the international community; and

    Whereas, Having a country like Azerbaijan, which shares American values and with whom the United States maintains close and productive ties, on the United Nations Security Council significantly strengthens Americans and Azerbaijani interests throughout the world and further fosters great trust and cooperation among American and Azerbaijani citizens: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives, where there are common energy independence goals, a desire for stronger business relationships, shared geopolitical goals, and common values, seeks to strengthen our ties with Azerbaijan.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to Governor Michael Pence, the members of the Indiana Congressional delegation, and Azerbaijan's Ambassador to the United States.
