Synopsis: Distribution of water resources. Requires the department of natural resources to: (1) identify and describe aquifers directly connected to the Wabash River, White River, and Ohio River basins (basins); (2) maintain a data base with the basins' information gathered; (3) submit a status report of the basins' information gathered to the water resources study committee (committee); and (4) develop water conservation measures related to the basins consistent with those measures developed for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River basin. Requires the committee to: (1) study issues concerning water distribution systems relevant to the basins; and (2) examine and identify measures necessary to develop a plan to create a stable grid linking existing water distribution systems.

    A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning natural and cultural resources.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

SOURCE: IC 14-25-17; (13)IN1345.1.1. -->     SECTION 1. IC 14-25-17 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE AS A NEW CHAPTER TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2013]:
     Chapter 17. Water Resources and Conservation of the Wabash River Basin, White River Basin, and Ohio River Basin
    Sec. 1. As used in this chapter, "basin" means the watershed of the Wabash River, White River, and Ohio River.
    Sec 2. As used in this chapter, "measures" means any legislation, law, regulation, directive, requirement, guideline, program, policy, administrative practice, or procedure.
    Sec. 3. The department shall:
        (1) not later than December 31, 2013, identify and describe aquifers directly connected to the Wabash River, White River, and Ohio River, including a description of the production potential of the aquifers identified; and
        (2) maintain in a common base of data the information gathered under subdivision (1).
    Sec. 4. The department shall submit a status report concerning the information gathered under section 3 of this chapter to the water resources study committee not later than October 31, 2013.
    Sec. 5. The department shall identify and develop water conservation measures for the basin that are consistent with conservation measures the department develops for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin.

    (b) As used in this chapter, "measures" means any legislation, law, regulation, directive, requirement, guideline, program, policy, administrative practice, or procedure.
    (c) The committee shall, during the 2013 legislative interim, study issues concerning water distribution systems relevant to the Wabash River basin, White River basin, and Ohio River basin. The committee shall examine and identify measures necessary to develop a plan to create a stable grid linking existing water distribution systems.
    (d) This SECTION expires December 31, 2013.
