SENATE RESOLUTION

     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION recognizing National Catholic Schools Week, January 27 - February 2, 2013.

    Whereas, National Catholic Schools Week began in 1974 as an effort to recognize the importance of Catholic schools in America;

    Whereas, Catholic schooling is often preferred by parents because of the emphasis on academic, moral, and spiritual development;

    Whereas, The theme for National Catholic Schools Week in 2013 is "Catholic Schools Raise the Standards", an exceptionally fitting theme considering Catholic school students score above average on national academic tests and over 99% of students at Catholic high schools graduate each year;

    Whereas, Over 91% of graduates from schools within the Archdiocese of Indianapolis go on to attend college, an astounding number given that only 44.1% of public school graduates in Indianapolis do the same;

    Whereas, There are almost 7,000 elementary and

secondary Catholic schools in the nation, enrolling around 2.1 million students each year;

    Whereas, Each year, Catholic schools save taxpayers $20 billion dollars in education costs;

    Whereas, The impact of Catholic schools on our most vulnerable populations is tremendous. Catholic schools play a integral role in the education of students from low-income families and nearly 30% of Catholic school students represent minority populations;

    Whereas, Close to 15% of students enrolled in Catholic schools are not Catholic, a statistic which indicates that Catholic and non-Catholic parents alike see the value in a Catholic education; and

    Whereas, Catholic schools have proven beneficial to parents, students, and taxpayers alike. National Catholic Schools Week is an important way to recognize the impact of Catholic schools in our communities: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate recognizes National Catholic Schools Week, January 27-February 2, 2013.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mary McCoy, Glenn Tebbe, and John Elcesser.
