SENATE RESOLUTION


     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating Professor Melissa Butler on her retirement after 37 years of service to Wabash College.

    Whereas, Professor Melissa Butler has taught thousands of Wabash College students since 1976, teaching courses in Political Theory, International Relations and Foreign Policy, and the capstone course for senior political science majors;

    Whereas, Professor Butler is the first woman to receive tenure at Wabash College;

    Whereas, Professor Butler rose to full professor, chaired the Political Science Department, and served two terms as chair of the Social Sciences Division;

    Whereas, Professor Butler has taught literally around the world as a faculty member of the Semester at Sea program, a visiting senior lecturer at Sheffield City Polytechnic in Sheffield, England, a director of the Great Lakes College Association's European Urban Term, a summer faculty member of East China Normal University's International Summer School in Shanghai, and immersion trips to Europe and

Ecuador with Wabash students;

    Whereas, Professor Butler has received many accolades for her service to Wabash College, including being named the Eugene N. and Marian C. Beesley Professor of Political Science in 2008 and receiving the McLean-McTurnan-Arnold Award for Teaching Excellence in 1994;

    Whereas, Professor Butler is a recognized scholar of Jean- Jacques Rousseau and past president of the Rousseau Association; and

    Whereas, Professor Butler has profoundly affected the lives of many Wabash students, mentored new Wabash faculty members, served the College community through numerous committees and administrative positions, and "spread the fame of Wabash's honored name": Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate congratulates Professor Melissa Butler on her retirement after 37 years of service to Wabash College.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Professor Melissa Butler.
