Synopsis: Mathematics and science teachers. Authorizes the governing body of a school corporation to pay an annual bonus of up to $10,000 to a teacher who teaches certain secondary mathematics and science courses. Provides that the bonus is not subject to teacher collective bargaining provisions.

Effective: July 1, 2003.

    A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning education.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. IC 20-5-2-9 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2003]: Sec. 9. (a) As used in this section, "eligible courses" include the following:
        (1) In mathematics, the following:
            (A) Algebra I and II.                
            (B) Geometry.
            (C) Investigative geometry.
            (D) Trigonometry.
            (E) Precalculus.            
            (F) Calculus.
            (G) Probability and statistics.
            (H) Data analysis and probability.
            (I) Discrete mathematics.
            (J) Advanced placement or college credit mathematics.
        (2) In science, the following:
            (A) In integrated sciences: environmental science,

advanced environmental science, and advanced placement or college credit environmental science.
            (B) In biological sciences: biology, second year biology, and advanced placement or college credit biology.
            (C) In earth and space sciences: earth and space science, second year earth and space science, and advanced placement or college credit earth and space science.
            (D) In physical sciences: chemistry, second year chemistry, and advanced placement or college credit chemistry.
            (E) In physics: physics, second year physics, and advanced placement or college credit physics.
            (F) In other physical sciences: physical science, integrated chemistry and physics, and principles of flight and space travel.
    (b) As used in this section, "eligible teacher" means a teacher who:
        (1) is either:
            (A) certified or holds an endorsement in high school mathematics or science; or
            (B) a participant in the transition to teaching program under IC 20-6.1-3-11 who holds an appropriate degree or has appropriate professional experience; and
        (2) teaches at least as many eligible courses as courses that are not eligible courses.
    (c) Notwithstanding IC 20-7.5 or a contract bargained under IC 20-7.5, a governing body may pay an eligible teacher a bonus of not more than ten thousand dollars ($10,000) during each school year the teacher teaches.
